Croatian Islands

Croatia has over 1000 islands with an astonishing variety in size, geography and atmosphere. A few are close enough to the mainland to be joined by a bridge but most involve a ferry ride, a joyous journey that is itself part of the islands’ appeal.

Hvar is the most glitzy and the best known, the sunniest island in an extremely sunny country and an essential stopover for many yachties. Other islands with a wide international appeal include Brac, Rab and the most visited island of all, Krk.

Sipan in the Elaphiti Islands is a foodie haven, popular with residents of Dubrovnik who take a day trip for its exceptional restaurants; the car-free Lopud, the nearest inhabited island to Dubrovnik is popular with second-home owners in search for an island idyll, and medieval and upmarket KorĨula, claimed by Croatia to be the birthplace of the great explorer Marco Polo, has numerous appealing locations for a holiday home.
