Highly regarded vineyard and winery in the heart of Sussex sold by Savills

A 152-acre estate in the heart of the Sussex countryside, including a highly regarded vineyard and winery, has been sold by Savills.

The Kingscote Wine Estate, which had a guide price of £3.25m, is nestled in the Kingscote Valley, in West Sussex, between the Bluebell Railway and Wierwood Reservoir.

The farm extends to about 152 acres and includes a productive vineyard and orchard, producing premium still and sparkling wines and Champagne method ‘cyder’.

The initial vines were planted in 2010, 2011 and 2013, on the south-facing slopes which once formed part of the English country garden, established by the famous English horticulturalist William Robinson.

The vineyards and winery have been established to target production of more than 100,000 bottles of still and sparkling wine per year, and 2014 saw Kingscote Estate’s first harvest.

A Jacobean farmhouse, 15th century converted barn visitor centre, holiday cottage, shop and equestrian facilities also formed part of the sale.

Chris Spofforth, head of Savills farm agency in the south east, said: “We received a huge amount of interest in The Kingscote Wine Estate, from a broad range of buyers, including newcomers to viticulture and established growers, from the UK and abroad, as well as investors.

“We are seeing an increasing interest in land suitable for viticulture in the south east and are registering new entrants to this sector, whether they are well informed novices or existing landowners looking to extend the diversity of their holdings. Several existing producers are also actively expanding their growing areas.

“There is not only local interest, but from Europe and beyond, as the English wine industry really starts to find some traction and is producing some extremely good quality product.”
