Hazelwood architectural project in Dumfriesshire wins RICS Scotland ‘Design Through Innovation’ Award

26 April 2017

Ruins Studio, Hazelwood, a strikingly renovated former barn and cart shed in Dumfriesshire belonging to Lily Jencks, has won the Design Through Innovation RICS Scotland Award.

The winners were announced at the RICS Scotland Awards Ceremony on Wednesday 26 April at the Sheraton Hotel in Edinburgh, hosted by BBC broadcaster Catriona Shearer.

Savills were the project’s executive architects, working with Lily Jencks and French architect Nathanael Dorent.  Together the team transformed the derelict ruins of a small Dumfriesshire farm into a modern rural family retreat, making the most of the beautiful panoramic country views.  The result is a building which cleverly blends traditional and contemporary structures.

The project required an innovative solution in order to mesh the traditional and contemporary.  By inserting the modern building into the original ruins, through the use of a simple timber and steel external shell clad in plywood and covered with a EPDM membrane, the two have combined seamlessly with beautiful results.  The team also employed a local stonemason to match in re-shaped stone work.

The interiors are equally cutting-edge, with a curving and undulating internal tube structure made from plywood ribs and polystyrene covered in fibre glass.  This has created a cave-like atmosphere, contrasting with the simple lines of the external shell.

Savills Architect Michael Leybourne said: “Hazelwood is a particularly innovative building, both inside and out, and for this extraordinary piece of architecture to receive recognition by taking first place in the RICS Awards is wonderful.  It is a testament to the hard work of all who worked on the project, from Lily Jencks and her studio to Nathanael Dorent and the Savills Architects, not forgetting all the contractors who collaborated closely with designers throughout the project to produce excellent results.”

The RICS Awards showcase the achievements of the most inspirational regional initiatives and developments in land, property, construction and the environment.  Regarded as the premier property and construction Awards in the country, RICS bring together the most innovative projects in the region and awards the very best entries across eight categories.
